Audio Recording Third Ear Music Instruction System

As part of my MA, The Teaching Musician, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance (2018 - 2021), I researched the role of audio recording & playback, and its effects on awareness in music teaching. Inspired by experiences while delivering online music lessons during the lockdowns of 2020-21, I was guided by the work of Pauline Oliveros (Deep Listening) which explores the difference between involuntary hearing and active listening, and that of Shinichi Suzuki who used audio recording and playback technology to support his ‘mother tongue’ approach to music teaching & learning. Nietszche’s term, ‘third ear’, referring to a sort of ‘inner hearing’, provided me with the missing piece of the acronym. I presented my findings at The Postgraduate Research in Music Education Symposium (Trinity Laban, 2021), and at the Annual Conference of The Society of Music Education Ireland (SMEI, 2021).

Prêt-à-Médiatiser

Prêt-à-Médiatiser, a work by House of Pollyfibre, required innovative approaches to sound design involving field recording, found sound, sampling and layering in studio to achieve a score that could be played live in sync with performers. It premiered at Dublin Fringe Festival 2011 and was developed into a film (2012).

Socially Engaged Practice

Starting in 2008, I taught music as part of Common Ground’s Music for Me programme (2005 - 2012). In 2009-10, Create, Ireland’s national Development Agency for Collaborative Arts, in conjunction with arts organisation, Common Ground ran a mentoring programme centred on socially engaged arts practice. I was involved as artist and mentee, participating in the programme to its completion, involving a book & DVD launch, and panel discussion at IMMA, Dublin. This has informed a continuing collaborative practice with Fatima Groups United where I currently facilitate adult songwriters and guitar learners with the support of City of Dublin Education & Training Board (CDETB).
